Mulching goes wrong in two specific ways
Too deep and it holds water against the crown. Piled against the trunk and it rots the bark, which is where the volcano shaped mulch rings you see around this region come from. Both are easy to avoid and both are common.
Our mulching goes on at two to three inches over a bed that has been weeded and edged first, pulled back clear of every trunk. The depth and clearance we work to are the ones published by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County. It is not a complicated job, it just has to be done in the right order.

Where we work
We run mulching across Buffalo and 31 towns through Erie and Niagara counties. If your street is not on the list, call anyway. The edge of the route moves with whatever is already booked nearby, and one or two neighbours is usually enough to make a street work.

Most people book mulching alongside one or two of these. Putting them on a single agreement schedules better and prices better than booking each job separately, and you deal with one crew and one invoice for the whole property rather than chasing three contractors.
