Where the cut lands decides whether the tree recovers
A flush cut removes the branch collar, and without the collar the wound cannot close. The tree spends years trying and usually loses. Tree trimming done with a hedge trimmer mentality creates more problems than it solves.
Every cut is made at the collar, with the crown thinned rather than stripped and no more than a sensible share of live growth removed in one season. Pruning standards from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation say the same thing. Good tree trimming should be hard to see from the street a year later.
