Western New York gives you a narrow gap between the last real freeze and the point where growth takes off. Book too early and you are raking frozen ground, which tears crowns and does more damage than the debris would have done on its own. Book too late and the first cut stops being a start and becomes a rescue.
In most years the useful window opens somewhere between late March and the middle of April, once the ground has thawed enough to take a rake without lifting turf, and it closes when the lawn reaches about three inches.
Mulch laid over an unedged bed buries the edge and you lose that line for the rest of the season. A first cut taken too short on a lawn that spent five months under snow strips exactly the growth it needs to recover. Neither mistake costs anything to avoid and both are expensive to undo.
Customers on a seasonal schedule get slotted automatically based on how the thaw is actually running that year. That is the entire point of the program. You never have to watch the forecast and make the call yourself.
